Are you asking yourself which Ionian island is the best for your summer vacation? We have the answer – this is Corfu!

Corfu is the second-largest and northernmost island in the Ionian Sea. Due to its strategic position at the mouth of the Adriatic, close to mainland Greece, Italy and Albania, it was subject to frequent invasions. All over the island, you can find traces of the conquerors: the Venetians, the French, and the British ruled here. And although the Mediterranean climate has made it a popular beach resort, it is still a green oasis with a unique tradition.

Old city

Corfu, also known as Kerkyra, is the capital of the island. The historic center of the city is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Venetians ruled Corfu from 1386 to 1797, and it is here, in the old town of Corfu, that traces of their presence have been preserved. The cobbled alleys and pleasant streets are lined with tall, elegant pastel-colored buildings, and above them rise two majestic 16th-century fortresses. Paleo Frurio (Old Fortress) and Neo Frurio (New Fortress) defended the Republic of Venice from the Ottoman Empire for more than 400 years, and today they are the best observation platforms in Corfu, which offer stunning views of the city and the sea.

Art and history

If you love walking, then you will definitely be interested in the Corfu Trail. It is a difficult 220-kilometer route that runs along the entire length of the island. It will take about 10 days to go through it all. For those who are less physically prepared, we can offer a hike from the village of Old Peritia to the top of Mount Pantokrator. Pantokrator is located at an altitude of 906 m above sea level. You can get to the top by car, but after 2 hours of walking, you will see beautiful mountain scenery and, having reached the end, you will be proud of yourself.

The best beaches

Those looking for great sandy beaches will find them in Corfu. On the west coast, 16 km from the city, there is a long stretch of golden Glyfada beach with sun loungers and umbrellas, surrounded by hills covered with pine forests. There is everything for active recreation on the water. You can enjoy the local cuisine in the many taverns without having to think about what to cook for dinner.
